High cholesterol doesn't hurt. That's why you have to measure it
High cholesterol has no symptoms — you can feel perfectly fine while it builds up in your arteries. It’s a leading cause of heart attack and stroke, and one of the easiest conditions to detect with a simple blood test.
Know your numbers
| Type | What it is | What to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | All the cholesterol in your blood | The lower, the better |
| LDL (“the bad one”) | Builds up in artery walls | Keep it low |
| HDL (“the good one”) | Helps clear the arteries | The higher, the better |
| Triglycerides | Another type of fat in the blood | Keep them low |
Your doctor interprets these numbers based on your age, family history, and other risk factors. There is no single correct number for everyone — that’s why it needs to be discussed in a visit.
What you can do
- Cut back on saturated fats and fried food; add more vegetables, fruit, and whole grains.
- Move: walking 30 minutes a day already makes a difference.
- Quit smoking.
- If your doctor prescribed medication, take it exactly as directed.
